Am I Sick… or Is It Just Allergies? (and how to tell the difference)

We’ve all had that moment…
You wake up feeling a bit off. Congested. Tired. Foggy. Maybe a scratchy throat.
And the question comes up almost immediately:

Am I getting sick… or is this just allergies?
It can feel frustrating not knowing what your body is doing or how to respond.
As a nurse and health coach in Southern Ontario, I see this confusion come up often, especially during seasonal shifts. It’s more common than you’d think, and often more confusing than it needs to be.
The symptoms overlap, and your body doesn’t always give you a clear answer.
In general, allergies tend to come and go throughout the day.
You might notice things like:
sneezing
itchy eyes
clear congestion
Being sick, on the other hand, often feels a bit heavier.
You may feel:
run down
achy
feverish
like your body is working harder than usual
But here’s where it gets more interesting…
Sometimes it’s not just about which one it is.
Sometimes it’s about how your body is responding overall.
In some cases, for some people the body can start to over-respond.
Instead of reacting calmly to something in the environment, it goes into a heightened state of alert.
This can show up as ongoing allergy symptoms, or even things like unexplained hives (urticaria), where the immune system becomes more reactive than it needs to be.
And this is the part that often gets missed.
We tend to treat each symptom on its own, instead of stepping back and asking:
Why does my body feel like it’s constantly fighting something?
That uncertainty can be exhausting, especially when it keeps happening over and over again. Have the kids brought something new home from school? did you eat something that didn't agree with you last time? did you feel this way last spring??
Your body is telling you things all the time.
Many of us have been taught to push through, ignore, or normalize what we’re feeling. Instead of listening, we end up guessing… or going down the Google rabbit hole trying to piece things together.
What helps is stepping back and looking at the full picture, instead of trying to manage each symptom on its own.
Because more often than not, there is a pattern. Not something to panic about, but something to get curious about.
If you’ve been feeling off and can’t quite make sense of it, you’re not alone.
And more importantly…
You’re not crazy.
Sometimes it’s not about finding a quick answer. It’s about starting to understand your body in a way that actually makes things feel clearer. If you’re in Ontario and trying to make sense of ongoing symptoms, this is exactly where I start with people.
